Year 6 Transition Support

Helping children approach secondary school with confidence

The move from primary school to secondary school is one of the biggest transitions in a child’s educational life.

For many children it is exciting. For others, it can bring worries about new routines, making friends, finding their way around a larger school or coping with increased independence.

A little nervousness is entirely normal. However, for some children, anxiety about transition can begin to affect sleep, confidence, mood or enjoyment of school.

Common Concerns

Children often worry about:

  • Getting lost

  • Making new friends

  • Being separated from existing friendship groups

  • Managing homework

  • Finding classrooms

  • Moving between lessons

  • Coping with larger numbers of pupils

  • Meeting new teachers

  • Feeling different from their peers

Parents may notice increased anxiety, reassurance-seeking, sleep difficulties or reluctance to discuss the move.

How I Can Help

My transition support helps children:

  • Understand how anxiety works in the brain

  • Build confidence and resilience

  • Develop practical coping strategies

  • Focus on strengths and successes

  • Create a positive picture of secondary school

  • Feel better prepared for change

Support can be provided through individual sessions, small groups, classroom workshops or parent presentations.

For Schools

Transition workshops can be delivered to Year 6 pupils during the summer term and can be tailored to the needs of individual schools.

Parent information sessions can also be provided to support families during this important stage.

For Parents

Children do not need to face transition worries alone.

Early support can help children develop confidence and practical strategies before anxiety becomes established.
